Chief Medical Specialist

About the role

The Chief Medical Specialist leads clinical decision‑making for both inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring high‑quality, comprehensive care across promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative domains. This senior position also contributes to national health policy formulation and hospital programme management.

Key responsibilities

• Lead specialized clinical care, providing guidance on complex medical and surgical cases.
• Develop, review, and implement health policies, strategies, and clinical guidelines.
• Plan and manage hospital programmes, ensuring compliance with health standards.
• Mentor, train, and coach staff within the specialty, including medical officers and interns.
• Oversee research activities, publish findings, and spearhead community health initiatives.
• Act as Head of Department when required and lead assigned committees.
• Perform specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and medical procedures.
• Handle medico‑legal duties, including court attendance and forensic responsibilities.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a relevant clinical discipline.
• MBChB (or equivalent) and registration with the relevant professional body.
• Specialist and sub‑specialist recognition from the Medical Practitioners’ and Dentist Council, with a current practice licence.
• At least ten years of relevant experience, including five years at senior specialist level.
• Minimum two peer‑reviewed publications in medical fields.
• Completion of a leadership/management course of at least six weeks.
• Professional indemnity cover.
