About the role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a motivated intern to support its Civil Society Unit within the Governance Affairs Office. Based in Nairobi, the intern will assist in strengthening engagement with Major Groups and Stakeholders, with a special focus on youth and Indigenous Peoples.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in planning and organizing events related to UNEA-7 follow‑up and preparation for UNEA-8, including regional and global consultative meetings.
- Support the implementation of UNEA resolution 7/6 to enhance youth participation across UNEP programmes.
- Provide logistical, technical and post‑event reporting assistance for Major Groups and Stakeholders meetings and the Major Groups Facilitating Committee.
- Coordinate meeting arrangements, receive partner NGOs, and offer on‑site support.
- Take minutes, develop agendas and prepare written summaries of discussions.
- Facilitate engagement of Major Groups in Committee of Permanent Representatives and informal Group of Friends meetings.
- Help organise follow‑up workshops, webinars and conferences related to stakeholder engagement.
- Undertake other tasks as requested by the Programme Officer.
Required profile
- First‑level degree (bachelor’s or equivalent) in environmental studies, international relations, or a related field.
- Strong interest in civil society engagement, youth participation and environmental governance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
