About the role
AVSI Foundation Kenya is seeking an Integrated Clean Energy and Social Safeguards Specialist to support the Energy Component of the SISI‑RH project, which aims to improve sustainable energy access for refugees and host communities in Dadaab, Kenya. The role will be part of a pool of 3‑5 specialists and will report to the Programs Manager (National) while working closely with the GIZ‑UNHCR consortium.
Key responsibilities
- Establish and operationalise cookstove production centres, ensuring testing, quality assurance and compliance with standards.
- Strengthen stove and alternative‑fuel supply chains, including last‑mile distribution to refugee and host‑community enterprises.
- Promote adoption of clean cooking solutions through behaviour‑change campaigns, community sensitisation and pilot demonstrations.
- Provide technical training to artisans, SMEs and refugee enterprises on design, production, safety and efficiency testing of clean‑energy technologies.
- Support solar/mini‑grid and productive‑use‑of‑energy (PUE) initiatives, including technical assistance and results‑based‑financing mechanisms.
- Implement social and environmental safeguards and monitor compliance throughout project activities.
Required profile
- Relevant university degree or equivalent experience in renewable energy, environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in clean‑cooking technologies, solar mini‑grid systems or sustainable energy projects.
- Proven experience working with refugee or host‑community contexts, preferably in East Africa.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multi‑partner environments and deliver results under tight timelines.
