Java Backend Engineer – Microservices (Java 17, Spring Boot)

About the role

We are looking for a highly skilled Java Backend Engineer to join Standard Chartered’s Information Technology & Operations team. The role will be based in Malaysia or China and focuses on designing, developing and maintaining robust, scalable backend services using modern Java technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java 17 and Spring Boot (or Quarkus).
• Implement microservices architecture for scalability and maintainability.
• Develop REST and SOAP APIs and integrate with front‑end technologies such as React.
• Integrate with databases using ORM frameworks and ensure efficient connectivity.
• Build and maintain messaging services with JMS and Solace.
• Ensure API connectivity using platforms like Kong or Axway.
• Manage project dependencies and builds with Maven.
• Use Git for version control and Docker for containerisation.
• Create CI/CD pipelines and manage projects in Azure DevOps.
• Deploy and operate applications on OpenShift and AWS.
• Implement service virtualization for testing and development.
• Write unit tests with JUnit and conduct integration testing.
• Document APIs with Swagger and perform performance testing with JMeter.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional technology teams and promote Agile practices.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing and delivering Java backend services.
• Strong understanding of microservices principles and API design.
• Ability to work with cross‑functional teams across multiple locations.
• Commitment to high standards of regulatory and business conduct.
