Legal Officer – Insurance Litigation & Compliance

About the role
Responsible for providing legal counsel, coordinating external advocates, managing litigation, and ensuring regulatory compliance for the insurance business.
Key responsibilities
- Manage litigation matters, receive summons, assess liability, and oversee court appearances.
- Coordinate and supervise external lawyers and service providers, maintaining registers and fee reviews.
- Negotiate third‑party claims out of court, ensure adequate reserves, and pursue recoveries.
- Prepare legal reports, opinions, and monthly/quarterly updates for senior management and the Board.
- Review and develop internal policies to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor regulatory changes, advise management on legal implications, and support risk mitigation.
- Oversee the legal department staff, providing leadership, training, and performance monitoring.
- Approve discharge vouchers, judgments, and ensure timely payment processing with Finance.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized institution.
- Certified Public Secretary (CPS) with a current practising certificate.
- Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practising certificate and membership in the Law Society of Kenya.
- Minimum 3 years of legal practice in insurance or financial institutions, covering commercial law, litigation, and conveyance.
