Maintenance Technician – Production (Paint Technician)

About the role

The Maintenance Technician – Production (Paint Technician) is responsible for preparing and applying protective and decorative coatings on aircraft components. The role ensures all work meets Kenya Airways, KCAA and other regulatory standards while supporting the visual appeal of the airline's fleet.

Key responsibilities

• Remove old paint, corrosion and contaminants using chemical and mechanical methods.
• Clean, mask, sand and chemically treat surfaces before painting.
• Apply epoxy, polyurethane, enamel and chromate‑based products using appropriate techniques.
• Rectify paint defects such as runs, sags, fisheyes or foreign object debris.
• Inspect and document work to ensure compliance with OEM manuals and regulatory standards.
• Maintain spray equipment, paint booths, ventilation systems and related tools in safe, calibrated condition.
• Handle, store and dispose of paints, solvents and hazardous materials safely.
• Follow risk‑assessment procedures, use personal protective equipment and adhere to environmental regulations.

Required profile

• Completed recognized apprenticeship or KNEC Engineering Diploma (or equivalent).
• Trade test training or certification in industrial or aircraft painting.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in aircraft paint or similar industrial painting environment.
• Physical stamina to work in confined spaces and at heights.
• Good communication, teamwork and documentation abilities.

Required skills

• Surface preparation and paint application techniques.
• Use of epoxy, polyurethane, enamel and chromate‑based coatings.
• Operation and maintenance of spray equipment, paint booths and ventilation systems.
• Paint thickness measurement and color matching.
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings and process sheets.
• Knowledge of aircraft materials such as aluminum and composites.
• Understanding of safety regulations related to paint handling.
