Photographer – East Africa (Nairobi)

About the role

Reuters Pictures is seeking a skilled photographer to join its East Africa team in Nairobi. The role is part of a One Newsroom approach, collaborating closely with text, video and picture teams to deliver fast, accurate and impactful visual journalism for a global audience.

Key responsibilities

• Generate and develop visual story ideas and plan coverage of breaking news, enterprise, business, sports and major events.
• Produce high‑quality, accurate and compelling photography that meets Reuters editorial and technical standards.
• Work with text and video colleagues to identify integrated coverage opportunities and create distinctive visual storytelling.
• Identify exclusive picture opportunities, deeper visual narratives and long‑term photographic projects.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with sources, photographers, editors and other stakeholders across Kenya and the wider region.

Required profile

• Proven track record covering major stories in East Africa or similarly complex environments.
• Ability to work independently in the field, spot news and contribute original visual ideas.
• Strong understanding of Kenya’s political, economic and social landscape.
• Experience operating safely in fast‑moving, difficult or hostile situations such as protests, elections, humanitarian crises and conflict zones.

• Accurate captioning and metadata management.
• Fast and reliable picture filing and transmission from the field.
• Use of modern image‑management and transmission systems.
• Understanding of photographic ethics and Reuters editorial standards.
