Regional Legal Counsel

About the role

We are seeking a commercially‑minded Legal Counsel to join the Africa Hub legal team of a fast‑growing fintech group. The role focuses on corporate and commercial law, supporting operations across multiple African jurisdictions from Nairobi, with travel required across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, including financing, vendor and service agreements.
• Oversee contract management systems and standardisation to ensure consistent contracting across the region.
• Provide practical legal advice to business units on commercial and operational matters.
• Support regulatory and compliance matters and develop internal legal policies and processes.
• Manage corporate governance processes, corporate records and board/shareholder matters.
• Coordinate external counsel and assist the Regional Head of Legal & Compliance as needed.

Required profile

• LLM and LLB from a recognised institution.
• Minimum 5 years of post‑admission legal experience, preferably in‑house within financial services or fintech.
• Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
• Multi‑jurisdictional exposure, especially to African markets, is a plus.
• Experience setting up or improving legal processes is advantageous.

Required skills

• Strong commercial drafting and contract negotiation abilities with attention to detail.
• Ability to translate legal concepts into clear, actionable business advice.
• Basic understanding of corporate governance and company law.
• Solutions‑oriented mindset and ability to work with limited resources in a fast‑paced environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard legal research tools.
