Senior Coordination Officer (P5) – Marine & Coastal Programs

About the role

The Senior Coordination Officer (P5) will lead UNEP's marine and coastal initiatives in East Africa, overseeing outreach, financial management, and data‑driven planning. This senior position requires extensive experience in intergovernmental processes and large‑scale programme management.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver outreach activities, workshops, and seminars on marine and coastal topics.
• Lead field missions, guide external consultants and government officials, and prepare mission summaries.
• Manage financial contributions to the East African Trust Fund and ensure compliance with COP decisions.
• Coordinate budgeting, funding proposals, progress reports, and financial statements for programmes and projects.
• Act as spokesperson, building partnerships with key officials inside and outside UNEP.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop staff to ensure effective performance.
• Lead data collection, analysis, and reporting to support evidence‑based decision‑making.
• Perform other duties as required to advance marine and coastal objectives.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in environmental management, law, biology or natural sciences; or first‑level degree plus two years relevant experience.
• At least ten years of progressive experience in planning, implementing and managing marine and coastal programmes at national, regional or international level.
• Minimum five years of experience in intergovernmental processes, negotiations and conference support.
• Five years managing large marine‑environment programmes and projects.
• Three years of resource mobilisation experience.
• Desirable: completion of data‑analytics, business‑analytics or data‑science programmes.
