Senior Scientist – Environmental History

About the role

We are seeking a senior scientist to lead research on environmental history within the World Agroforestry Centre. The role involves guiding high‑quality scientific work, building partnerships, and representing the centre in global forums.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance to ensure research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and CIFOR teams to define and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate scientific publications and communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists, students, and staff.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional, and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional research funding; lead proposal development and donor reporting.
• Plan, monitor, and manage research activities, including budgeting and financial oversight.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental history, natural resource management, social sciences).
• Proven experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research across multiple regions.
• Track record of successful budget management and securing donor funding.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multiple partners and conduct fieldwork in developing countries.
• Experience in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
