Urban Planning and GIS Assistant (Consultant)

About the role

UN‑Habitat Ethiopia is looking for a Junior Urban Planner / GIS Expert to support geospatial data management, spatial analysis, mapping, field verification and evidence‑based planning activities in the Benishangul‑Gumuz Region.

Key responsibilities

• Compile, organize and consolidate spatial and non‑spatial datasets from government agencies, development partners and project sources.
• Develop and maintain a geospatial database covering settlements, infrastructure, services, environmental features and hazards.
• Prepare metadata and apply data‑management procedures.
• Conduct field validation missions and perform suitability and hazard analyses.
• Contribute to the Regional GIS Planning Atlas and support city‑leaders training, settlement planning and tenure‑security assessments.
• Assist the Programme Manager with reporting and coordination of GIS‑related activities.

Required profile

• Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, GIS or a related discipline.
• 1–2 years of experience in GIS, spatial analysis and geospatial data management.
• Familiarity with Ethiopian or regional data sources and ability to work in field conditions.
• Strong communication skills in English.
