Cartographer – Senior Technical Advisor

About the role

The U.S. Geological Survey is seeking a Cartographer to join the Cartographic Data Services team. In this senior position you will shape the delivery of The National Map (TNM) geospatial data and services, supporting both public and commercial users.

Key responsibilities

• Define strategies and guidelines for TNM data delivery and service provision.
• Develop long‑range plans for TNM systems, viewer capabilities, and data delivery approaches.
• Act as senior technical and strategic advisor to National Geospatial Program leadership, DOI executives, and inter‑agency partners.
• Oversee operational research, systems development, and implementation of new methods and technologies.
• Lead enhancements to TNM products such as base maps, download APIs, cloud‑based dynamic services, and future service designs.
• Create FAQs, training materials, and documentation to improve public and commercial sector usage.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen, national, or individual owing allegiance to the United States.
• Eligibility for federal employment, including CTAP, ICTAP, or RPL pathways.
• Willingness to serve a one‑year probationary period as a condition of employment.
• Demonstrated experience in cartography, geospatial data management, and strategic planning.
