Deputy Director, Legal Services (Nairobi)

About the role

The Deputy Director, Legal Services will lead the legal function of the Bureau, ensuring robust governance, sound legal advice, and effective risk management. Reporting to senior leadership, this senior professional will support the Board and oversee all legal matters related to the Bureau’s mandate.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate preparation, circulation, and custody of Board papers, minutes, and the Bureau seal.
• Develop, implement, and review policies, strategies, standards, and guidelines for legal services.
• Oversee drafting of legal opinions, agreements, contracts, and memoranda of understanding.
• Lead contract negotiations and ensure signed documents are securely stored.
• Monitor legal research, identify compliance risks, and interpret legal information for policy development.
• Provide legal advice to the Board and senior management, attend court proceedings on behalf of the Bureau, and prepare witnesses.
• Maintain a calendar for Board and Committee meetings and coordinate annual Board evaluation activities.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years at Assistant Director level or equivalent.
• Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Law (LLB) from a recognized university.
• Post‑graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (Council of Legal Education).
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with at least 8 years of good standing.
• Valid practising certificate from the Law Society of Kenya.
• Registered Certified Secretary in good standing with the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya.
