Assistant Manager – Tax & Legal Compliance

About the role

The Assistant Manager will take end‑to‑end ownership of Kenya tax, statutory compliance, customer‑related legal matters and regulatory cases. You will ensure timely compliance, effective case management and protection of the company’s interests while minimizing tax, legal and regulatory risks.

Key responsibilities

• Manage VAT, Income Tax, Withholding Tax, PAYE, Excise Duty, Customs/Import Taxes and other applicable Kenya taxes.
• Prepare and file accurate tax returns, payments, statutory filings, computations, reconciliations and provisions.
• Monitor changes in Kenya tax laws, Finance Acts and KRA regulations; manage KRA audits, assessments, objections and appeals.
• Maintain a database of customer disputes, claims, recovery matters and legal cases; coordinate with external lawyers.
• Track licenses, registrations, permits and ensure timely renewals.
• Provide tax advice on contracts, inter‑company transactions, capital expenditure and promotional schemes.
• Reconcile tax ledgers with returns and SAP; follow up tax credits, refunds and review tax implications of claims.
• Prepare monthly dashboards covering cases, exposures, penalties, provisions and required actions.

Required profile

• CPA (K) or Chartered Accountant – mandatory.
• 7–10 years of relevant professional experience.
• Strong Kenya taxation experience, especially with KRA matters.
• Experience in VAT, Income Tax, WHT, PAYE, Excise Duty and Customs.
• Proven track record managing tax assessments, objections and appeals.
