Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

About the role

GiveDirectly, Inc is seeking a visionary Chief Technology Officer to lead the design and delivery of secure, high‑scale software that moves billions of dollars to millions of vulnerable people worldwide. Reporting to the CEO and partnering with the VP of Product, you will shape technology strategy across engineering, data, security and enterprise systems.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and scale the legacy technology stack while building new platforms for rapid growth.
• Lead a growing engineering team of 15‑30 engineers, hiring, mentoring and establishing high‑velocity delivery processes.
• Oversee identity and fraud management, mobile‑money integration, and machine‑learning pipelines on large, imperfect datasets.
• Make architecture, build‑vs‑buy and AI‑first decisions, ensuring reliability, security and regulatory compliance across diverse country contexts.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with product, operations and leadership to align technology with business goals.

Required profile

• Proven track record hiring, developing and retaining top engineering talent.
• Strong technical judgment with ability to evaluate designs, pressure‑test architecture and intervene when needed.
• Low‑ego, hands‑on problem‑solving attitude and decisive business decision‑making under ambiguity.
• Experience embedding AI into engineering workflows and establishing AI‑first culture.
