Legal Officer – Insurance Litigation & Compliance

About the role

The Legal Officer will provide legal counsel and manage litigation for First Assurance Kenya, supporting the insurance business in protecting its interests and ensuring regulatory compliance. This position reports to senior management and works closely with external advocates and internal stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Manage litigation matters, receive summons, assess liability and coordinate external counsel.
• Review and negotiate legal claims, maintain adequate reserves, and prepare settlement or appeal recommendations.
• Oversee third‑party recoveries, initiate suits or out‑of‑court negotiations, and follow up on judgment payments.
• Prepare legal reports, opinions, and monthly/quarterly updates for executive and board meetings.
• Develop and advise on internal policies to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor regulatory changes affecting the insurance sector and provide strategic guidance.
• Lead, train, and supervise the legal department staff, ensuring proper documentation and database maintenance.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized institution.
• Certified Public Secretary (CPS) with a current practising certificate.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practising certificate and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Kenya.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in legal practice within insurance or financial institutions, covering commercial law, litigation and conveyance.
