Plumber I-II, Facility Maintenance (Multiple Locations)

About the role

The Department of Facility Maintenance is hiring plumbers (grades 18 and 20) across multiple locations to provide plumbing and gas fitting and maintenance of school and building equipment systems. The work is done under general supervision, mostly independently, and may include helping train and mentor other plumber/gas fitter staff. The shift runs 6:00am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday, and the application closes on 30 October 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze, diagnose and troubleshoot plumbing and gas fitting problems
• Install, repair, replace, build, prefabricate, alter and maintain plumbing and gas equipment
• Maintain school and building equipment systems
• Work in conditions with frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, dust, fumes, noise and heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds); physical work makes up more than 70% of the job
• Follow extensive safety precautions and use protective equipment where needed
• Work beyond a 40-hour week as required

Required profile

• Grade 18: high school or GED diploma, successful completion of an acceptable apprentice-level plumbing/gas fitting program, and four years of progressive experience in plumbing, pipefitting or commercial kitchen, two years at apprentice II or equivalent
• Grade 20: high school or GED diploma, successful completion of an acceptable apprentice-level program, and five years of progressive experience in plumbing or gas fitting, two years at journey level
• Valid driver's license for all levels
• Backflow prevention certification and, for grade 20, an active Journeyman Plumber license

Required skills

• Use of tools and knowledge of plumbing and gas fitting equipment and procedures
• Ability to read and follow written, verbal and visual directions and to communicate clearly
• Use of computers, including administrative software and computerized maintenance management systems
• Knowledge of the core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)
