Assistant Baker

About the role

The Assistant Baker supports the Head Baker and the production team in preparing and baking high-quality bakery products. The role covers measuring ingredients, making doughs and batters, operating baking equipment, keeping product quality consistent and following food safety and hygiene standards. It is a full-time position based in Mlolongo.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in preparing and baking bread, buns, pastries, cakes and other bakery products.
• Measure, weigh and mix ingredients according to approved recipes, and prepare doughs, batters, fillings and toppings.
• Operate ovens, mixers, proofers and other bakery equipment safely and efficiently, monitoring times and temperatures.
• Check products against quality standards for taste, texture, appearance and weight, and report defects to the Head Baker or Production Supervisor.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the production area and follow food safety regulations, GMP and hygiene procedures.
• Help receive, check and store ingredients, monitor stock levels and support FIFO stock rotation.
• Clean equipment and workstations, perform basic checks and report faults.
• Follow production schedules and work orders, and help package finished goods for dispatch.

Required profile

• At least 3 years of baking experience in a commercial bakery or kitchen.
• Diploma or certificate in Baking, Food Production, Culinary Arts or a related field is an added advantage.
• Ability to follow recipes and production schedules accurately.

Required skills

• Baking techniques and food preparation methods.
• Knowledge of food safety, hygiene and sanitation standards.
• Understanding of GMP and good manufacturing practices.
