About the role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Battery End‑of‑Life Consultant to support its Sustainable Mobility Unit in the Caribbean region. Based in Nairobi, the consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer for Heavy‑Duty Vehicles and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to develop a strategic hub‑and‑spoke model for handling end‑of‑life electric‑vehicle batteries.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare a comprehensive assessment report that informs the design of a regional hub‑and‑spoke system for collection, consolidation and transboundary shipment of end‑of‑life EV batteries across Caribbean Island Countries.
- Conduct a stock‑take of current battery imports, exports and EV registrations, and identify potential hub locations.
- Analyse existing battery waste flows, project future volumes and evaluate current disposal and export practices.
- Assess infrastructure readiness, including interim storage, collection mechanisms, packaging and transport capabilities.
- Map existing shipping and freight routes, logistics providers, aggregation opportunities and safety requirements for cross‑border shipment.
- Identify institutional gaps, regulatory, technical and logistical barriers, and propose solutions.
- Map key stakeholders such as Basel Focal Points, customs authorities, waste operators and shipping companies, outlining their potential roles.
Required profile
- Relevant university degree in environmental science, engineering, logistics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in waste management, battery recycling, or sustainable mobility projects.
- Strong analytical and report‑writing abilities.
- Familiarity with Caribbean regulatory frameworks and stakeholder landscapes is an advantage.
