Behavioural Science Consultant – UNICEF (Remote)

About the role

UNICEF is seeking an experienced behavioural scientist to join its Global Programme Division on a long‑term consultancy basis. The consultant will work remotely, providing on‑demand expertise to country offices, regional hubs and centres of excellence across the full programme cycle – from research and diagnosis to design and evaluation of social and behaviour change interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct rigorous behavioural diagnostics to identify drivers of behaviour in health, nutrition, education, child protection, WASH, social policy and climate resilience contexts.
• Design, test and refine evidence‑based interventions using behavioural economics, decision science and implementation science tools.
• Apply advanced computational methods – including machine learning, large language models, agent‑based simulation, network and geospatial analysis – to programme data.
• Support adaptive experimentation and evaluate impact, translating findings into actionable programme recommendations.
• Provide capacity‑building support and guidance to UNICEF teams on behavioural‑science best practices.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in behavioural science, psychology, economics, public health or a related field.
• Proven experience applying behavioural‑science methods to development or humanitarian programmes.
• Strong analytical mindset with ability to work across interdisciplinary teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
