Chief Engineer

About the role

The Chief Engineer leads the Engineering Department of a hotel, ensuring that all mechanical, electrical, HVAC and related systems operate safely, efficiently and in line with brand standards. This senior position reports to the General Manager and collaborates closely with senior hotel leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct regular walk‑abouts to visually assess the condition of the building structure, mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems, as well as public and back‑of‑house areas.
• Verify completion of routine maintenance, repairs, replacements and renovation projects across the property.
• Recruit, train, supervise and discipline engineering staff, including duty engineers, plumbers, painters, joiners and apprentices.
• Manage budgets, purchase orders, contractor bids and schedules while adhering to corporate purchasing policies.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety policies and enforce safety procedures for personnel, contractors and equipment.
• Maintain energy‑management and preventive‑maintenance programs and provide training to other departments on equipment use.
• Prepare annual repair & maintenance, utilities and capital budgets, monitor expenditures and propose cost‑effective solutions.
• Oversee capital project releases, technical specifications, bidding processes and ensure compliance with building regulations and codes.
• Develop and update departmental SOPs, training matrices and manpower schedules.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading an engineering team in a hotel or similar hospitality environment.
• Strong knowledge of building systems, regulations and codes.
• Excellent organizational, budgeting and project‑management abilities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with senior management and external contractors.
