Communication and Advocacy Consultant

About the role

The Communication and Advocacy Consultant will support UNEP's Source to Sea Pollution Unit in raising the visibility of the Wastewater Surveillance Initiative for Africa. Based in Nairobi, the incumbent reports to the Programme Management Officer (Wastewater) and will work for an expected 12‑month contract.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a communications and visibility plan aligned with UNEP corporate priorities and EU/HERA requirements.
• Create high‑quality knowledge products – news stories, policy briefs, web content, newsletters, speeches, infographics and multimedia – that translate complex scientific data into clear messages for diverse audiences.
• Maintain and regularly update UNEP web pages and social‑media channels, monitor engagement analytics and recommend improvements.
• Provide communications guidance for stakeholder engagement with African governments, WHO, Africa CDC, regional bodies, donors and media.
• Lead communications for webinars, workshops, launches and high‑level meetings, including messaging, promotional materials and post‑event reporting.
• Coordinate systematic documentation of project results, case studies, beneficiary stories and best‑practice guides for dissemination across regional and global networks.
• Ensure donor visibility and compliance with UNEP and European Commission branding and reporting requirements.
• Prepare media materials, manage media outreach and respond to enquiries in collaboration with UNEP’s Communications Division.

Required profile

• Proven experience in strategic communications, advocacy and stakeholder engagement within an environmental or public‑health context.
• Strong ability to synthesize technical and policy information into accessible, audience‑appropriate content and to manage digital and multimedia production workflows.
