Communications Intern

About the role

Helen Keller International is looking for a Communications Intern to assist the Country team in implementing organizational communications strategies. The intern works with the team to help achieve goals and initiatives related to programming and communications, based in Westlands, Kenya.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and format knowledge products such as policy briefs, data analysis, case studies and human-interest stories with program staff.
• Draft and edit articles, newsletters and social media content to support advocacy and knowledge sharing.
• Act as a brand ambassador, supporting brand compliance and coordinating trainings with the global team.
• Partner with the Center for Marketing and Branding to develop materials and support branding for the Kenya office.
• Gather people-first impact stories, including interviews with community members, and gather program photos and videos with written informed consent, uploading them to the media asset platform.
• Maintain a shared folder of communication materials and support social media and digital communication.
• Help the Country Director and program team prepare donor-facing materials such as fact sheets, donor reports and presentations, and track donor engagement opportunities and calls for proposals.
• Document project impact stories to support donor stewardship.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a related field (English, Marketing/Communications, Advertising or Public Relations).
• Interest in communications, public relations, business development or fundraising within the NGO/development sector.
• Fluency in spoken and written English and Kiswahili.

Required skills

• Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, adapted to community, donors, policymakers and media audiences.
• Social media management and basic digital content creation; graphic design, photography or video editing is an added advantage.
• Organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently.
