Country Director – Kenya (National Only)

About the role

The Country Director will lead Mercy Corps’ operations in Kenya, overseeing a diverse portfolio of programs that address poverty, conflict, and resilience. Reporting to regional leadership, the Director will be responsible for strategic direction, donor relations, and ensuring impact across the country.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall strategic leadership and management of Mercy Corps Kenya, ensuring alignment with global mission and objectives.
• Oversee program design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation across sectors such as market systems, governance, youth employment, and conflict mitigation.
• Manage relationships with major donors (USAID, FCDO, EC, etc.), partners, government agencies, and private sector stakeholders.
• Lead financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation to meet program targets and compliance requirements.
• Represent Mercy Corps in regional forums, advocacy initiatives, and cross‑border collaborations.
• Build and mentor a high‑performing local team, fostering a culture of accountability and learning.

Required profile

• Kenyan national with extensive experience in senior leadership roles within international development or humanitarian NGOs.
• Proven track record of managing large, multi‑donor portfolios and delivering results in complex environments.
• Strong understanding of Kenya’s political, economic, and social context, especially in market systems, governance, and youth employment.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Ability to travel domestically and regionally as required.
