About the role
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking a motivated intern to support the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea (GARS) team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme. This six‑month, full‑time, unpaid internship offers hands‑on experience in maritime crime prevention and drug control initiatives across East Africa.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches.
- Assist in organising technical assistance workshops, high‑level events and conferences.
- Attend meetings, take detailed notes and produce minutes.
- Translate documents and material between Somali and English.
- Maintain and regularly update an Excel tracker for programme grants, expenditures, timelines and reporting deadlines.
- Maintain a consolidated procurement tracker for ongoing and planned procurement processes.
- Perform other tasks as required by the professional staff.
Required profile
- Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate programme, or in the final year of a bachelor’s programme, with official university proof.
- Computer literate in standard software applications.
- Strong interest in United Nations work and commitment to its Charter ideals.
- Ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Required skills
- Microsoft Excel (advanced tracking and reporting).
