Educational Interpreter/Transliterator for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Students (Part‑time)

About the role

This part‑time position supports deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students from kindergarten through age 21 across Montgomery County schools. The interpreter/transliterator will facilitate communication between students, peers, teachers, parents, and other staff using sign language and cued speech.

Key responsibilities

• Provide real‑time sign language interpretation in classroom settings, meetings, and extracurricular activities.
• Perform cued‑speech transliteration for students who use this communication mode.
• Interpret instructional content, discussions, and technical subjects at a normal conversational rate.
• Assist with tutoring and individualized support as needed.
• Adapt interpretation techniques for elementary (Interpreter I) and secondary (Interpreter II) environments.

Required profile

• Graduated from an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent.
• Previous experience in an educational setting is preferred.
• Ability to interpret and transliterate fluently at a conversational pace.
• Certification preferred but not mandatory.

Required skills

• Sign language interpretation
• Cued speech transliteration
• RID Interpreter/Translator Certificate (or comparable qualification)
• NCSA Transliteration Certificate

• Hourly wage ranging from $28.57 to $44.10 based on years of service.
