Finance and Budget Officer – UN Nairobi

About the role

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is seeking multiple Finance and Budget Officers to join its Budget and Financial Management Service. The incumbents will support strategic planning, budgeting, financial management, grants and voluntary contributions, ensuring compliance with UN financial regulations and IPSAS standards.

Key responsibilities

• Provide substantive input to strategic planning, results‑based budgeting and resource allocation.
• Review, analyse and validate cost estimates and budget proposals for regular and extra‑budgetary resources.
• Monitor budget implementation, analyse variances and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare budget performance reports with variance analysis for management decision‑making.
• Manage staffing tables and assess financial implications of recruitment and organisational changes.
• Implement cost‑recovery mechanisms and reconcile receivables.
• Validate contribution agreements, monitor accounts receivable for voluntary contributions and apply expected credit loss where required.
• Advise programme managers on grants management policies, prepare donor financial reports and ensure transactions are recorded in line with IPSAS.
• Support internal and external audits by providing detailed analyses and responses.

Required profile

• University degree in finance, accounting, economics or a related field.
• Professional experience in budgeting, financial management or grants administration, preferably within an international organization.
• Strong knowledge of United Nations Financial Regulations, Rules and IPSAS.
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills with attention to detail.
