Fixed-Term Pharmaceutical Technologist

About the role

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, is a private not-for-profit teaching hospital accredited by the Joint Commission International, offering tertiary and secondary healthcare. Its Nairobi Outreach Division is a network of 54 medical centres across East Africa, each with an on-site pharmacy and laboratory. This fixed-term position is based in Westlands and involves receiving, verifying and dispensing medicines safely.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, verify prescriptions and dispense drugs in a timely manner within approved standards and procedures; contact the physician immediately for inaccurate or illegible orders and document errors.
• Check expiry dates before dispensing and ensure every label shows the correct patient name, drug, quantity and directions.
• Compound extemporaneous preparations and mix certain intravenous medications according to procedure.
• Counsel patients on drug administration and use of devices for optimal recovery.
• Update drug credits on the system, deliver drug discharges to ward patients and report out-of-stock items to the prescriber and nurse with alternatives or arrangements to order.
• Handle medications in line with environmental health and safety regulations, record and update the expiry list, and complete documentation of interventions, medication errors, near misses, adverse events, queries and complaints.
• Perform daily random medication checks, monitor variance levels in the satellite units, compile daily satellite reports and carry out regular stock-takes.

Required profile

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
• Registered with the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association and holding a practicing licence from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
• 2 years of working experience in a busy facility, preferably a hospital.
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
