Addiction Counselor

About the role

The Emmanuel Treatment and Resource Center Limited is hiring a full-time Addiction Counselor in Nairobi (Ngong/Westlands area). The counselor coordinates substance abuse programs, runs group and individual therapy, and supports clients through their treatment journey.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including intake summaries, SOAP notes, discharge summaries, treatment plans and updates.
• Coordinate the substance abuse program using various counseling methods and the Twelve Steps system, and schedule intakes, group and individual therapies.
• Discuss cases with the program officer to decide whether clients are suitable for substance misuse treatment.
• Facilitate psycho-educational and behavior modification through group and individual therapy.
• Conduct risk and need assessments and create individual treatment plans for each client.
• Meet clients regularly, document their progress or regression, and help them overcome obstacles to completing treatment.
• Keep significant others informed about progress, and ensure client records are completed accurately and on time.
• Select and recommend instructional materials and programs, stay up to date on developments in substance use disorder therapy, and maintain collegial relationships with other professionals.
• Perform other duties assigned by the departmental head.

Required profile

• Diploma in Addiction Counseling from an accredited college or university, with at least 3 years of active practice; rehabilitation experience preferred.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Clean and sober.
