About the role
CIMMYT is building a talent roster of qualified geneticists to be considered for future breeding and genomics positions across its global network. The role focuses on designing breeding schemes, advancing molecular breeding tools, and supporting breeding teams in the Global South.
Key responsibilities
- Design and evaluate breeding schemes using simulation, retrospective analysis, and pilot testing.
- Coordinate molecular breeding work to improve adaptation to temperate environments through genomics, genome assemblies, and transcriptome analysis.
- Analyze genomic differentiation between tropical and temperate seed lines and map traits such as photoperiod sensitivity and stress resistance.
- Lead training, mentorship, and capacity‑building activities for CGIAR‑NARES breeding teams in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
- Contribute to joint research proposals, manuscript writing, and publication of high‑impact research.
Required profile
- PhD in plant breeding, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, plant biotechnology or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, preferably in a modern breeding program or private industry.
- Strong understanding of practical breeding applications, logistical constraints, and the needs of developing‑world breeding programs.
- Excellent English communication skills and a collaborative, multicultural mindset.
Required skills
- Proficiency in R and Python for statistical analysis and machine‑learning applications.
- Experience with mixed‑model analysis, quantitative genetics theory, and bioinformatics pipelines.
- Expertise in genomics, molecular biology, gene discovery, cloning, and functional validation.
- Track record of peer‑reviewed publications in high‑impact journals.
