Head of Chemicals Science and Policy Unit

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a senior leader to head its Chemicals Science and Policy Unit in Nairobi. The role combines scientific expertise with policy influence to drive global chemical management and innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Define and lead UNEP’s strategy for collecting, analysing and prioritising scientific information on chemicals and pollution challenges.
• Provide thought‑leadership linking science to policy, supporting parties in meeting obligations under chemicals agreements.
• Engage with international policy processes such as the Intergovernmental Science Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution and contribute to position papers and briefs.
• Oversee programmes that improve access to scientific data, integrate AI tools like Environment‑GPT, and manage the unit’s budget and resources.
• Respond to high‑level requests from UNEP’s Executive Office and ensure data is discoverable and shareable across the organisation.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, toxicology or related field; a Bachelor’s with additional experience may be considered.
• At least 10 years of progressive experience generating and managing scientific information on environmental issues, especially chemicals.
• Proven experience working with national or international policymakers and advocating for science‑based regulations.
• Leadership experience managing cross‑functional scientific or policy teams.
