Junior Legal Counsel (Nairobi)

About the role

Systemiq is seeking a Junior Legal Counsel to join its global legal team, working from the Nairobi office 2–3 days per week. You will support commercial, corporate, and grant‑related legal work for a purpose‑driven organisation focused on sustainability and system change.

Key responsibilities

• Support legal and operations leads across corporate, commercial, grants and HR workstreams, managing routine legal matters with senior guidance.
• Own legal operations processes such as FAQs, playbooks, checklists, training materials and workflow improvements.
• Assist the Head of Legal (Commercial) with client contracts, NDAs, procurement contracts and contract lifecycle management.
• Support the Head of Legal (Corporate) on corporate templates, share and asset transactions, entity set‑up, board materials and corporate filings.
• Coordinate vendor onboarding, KYC, due diligence and sanctions screening for grants and philanthropic projects.

Required profile

• 1–2 years post‑qualification experience in a reputable law firm or in‑house team, preferably in corporate/commercial or NGO/charity sectors.
• Strong interest in sustainability, environmental or social‑enterprise missions.
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
• Detail‑oriented, organized and able to manage multiple priorities with limited oversight.

Required skills

• Legal research and drafting using legal databases and AI tools.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and document‑management systems.
• Ability to create and maintain legal templates, checklists and training materials.
