Legal Officer – First Assurance Kenya

About the role

The Legal Officer will provide legal counsel, coordinate external advocates, negotiate settlements of third‑party claims and manage recoveries for Absa’s First Assurance Kenya unit based at Gitanga Road.

Key responsibilities

• Receive summons, assess liability and appoint service providers.
• Review legal claims, conduct out‑of‑court negotiations and instruct external lawyers.
• Review judgments and manage third‑party recoveries.
• Review internal policies for statutory and regulatory compliance and advise management on legal interpretations.
• Conduct legal research and monitor regulatory changes.
• Support management in identifying and mitigating legal risks, liaise with departments and respond to Insurance Regulatory Authority matters.
• Prepare reports for board and executive meetings.
• Provide leadership and training to legal department staff, maintain documentation and legal databases, and conduct bi‑annual reviews of outstanding liability claims.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognised institution and higher diplomas in Law, Military Science and Security.
• Certified Public Secretary (CPS) with a current practising certificate.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, member in good standing of the Law Society of Kenya.
• Minimum three years of legal practice in an insurance or financial institution, with experience in commercial law, litigation and conveyance.
