Medical Officer - Outreach Clinic Meru

About the role

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, N) is a private not-for-profit teaching hospital accredited by the Joint Commission International, with an outreach division of 53 medical centers across East Africa. The clinic in Meru offers consulting rooms, specialists, qualified medical officers, experienced nurses, a receptionist, an on-site pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services. The position holder provides quality, safe healthcare to patients following evidence-based practice and hospital policies.

Key responsibilities

• Review and examine patients regularly, taking case histories, conducting physical examinations and ordering laboratory and radiology tests according to evidence-based protocols.
• Monitor the progress of acute and chronically ill patients on a regular basis.
• Discuss cases with patients and caregivers to improve diagnosis and treatment.
• Carry out emergency surgical and medical procedures when necessary.
• Provide screening, wellness checks, risk assessment, early detection and education on illness prevention.
• Consult with relevant departments to agree on treatment plans for complex cases.
• Ensure smooth referrals between the clinic, clinic management and the main hospital.
• Work with clinical and non-clinical teams to coordinate care and improve resource use.
• Take part in clinic quality initiatives with the Quality and Patient Safety team.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent.
• Successful completion of at least a 1-year post-graduate internship.
• Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
• Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate.
