NLP & AI Internship – Focus on African Languages

About the role

We are seeking enthusiastic interns to support our Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives at the Africa Center for Health Systems and Gender Justice in Nairobi. The internship focuses on developing ethical, community‑grounded AI solutions for African languages, particularly Swahili and Sheng.

Key responsibilities

• Support data collection and annotation for language datasets.
• Assist in preprocessing and analyzing textual data using Python.
• Contribute to the development and testing of NLP models under supervision.
• Document findings and help ensure ethical AI practices.

Required profile

• Background in computer science, data science, computational linguistics, AI, NLP, information systems, or related fields.
• Interest in African languages, especially Swahili and Sheng.
• Strong commitment to ethical, community‑grounded AI.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of Python.
• Familiarity with NLP libraries (e.g., NLTK, spaCy, Hugging Face).
• Understanding of machine learning concepts.
• Experience with data annotation or language data processing is a plus.
