Principal Generalist Engineer

About the role

Moniepoint, an African financial platform serving 20 million businesses and individuals, is hiring a senior Generalist Engineer for its R&D team. The role owns problems end to end and delivers complete production systems, spanning software, distributed systems, infrastructure, data and, where useful, machine learning.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build reliable, scalable, observable production systems
• Own systems end to end: problem, design, data, implementation, deployment and operations
• Work across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines and ML systems
• Debug complex production issues across multiple layers
• Make engineering trade-offs based on first principles and improve performance, latency, reliability and cost
• Contribute to architecture and technical direction, write maintainable code and documentation
• Decide when to use ML versus deterministic systems, train and evaluate models, build reproducible pipelines, deploy models and monitor drift and cost

Required profile

• Strong CS fundamentals (DSA, OS, networking, distributed systems)
• Solid probability and statistics
• Experience building production systems at scale
• Ability to move across languages and understand system behaviour under load and failure
• Strong debugging skills and reasoning with invariants and failure modes

Required skills

• Languages: Go, Java, Python, Rust, SQL
• Linux, containers and Kubernetes
• Data systems, streaming systems, ML infrastructure and performance optimization
