Professional Engineer – Public Water Supply & Subdivision

About the role

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is seeking a Professional Engineer to support its Public Water Supply and Subdivision programs. In this position you will apply your engineering expertise to protect drinking water, wastewater, and subdivision infrastructure across the state.

Key responsibilities

• Perform professional engineering work that requires licensure, including consulting, investigation, evaluation, planning, and review of water‑related systems.
• Review designs and operations for drinking water, wastewater, and subdivision components to ensure compliance with state regulations.
• Provide technical guidance on mining and environmental engineering projects as needed.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve engineering challenges.
• Maintain accurate documentation and support DEQ’s mission of a healthy environment.

Required profile

• Licensed Professional Engineer in Montana as defined by state law.
• Education and experience meeting Montana Code Annotated requirements.
• Preferred experience in mining or environmental engineering.
• Current valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Engineers in Training may be considered.

Required skills

• Professional Engineering licensure.
• Knowledge of drinking water system design.
• Knowledge of wastewater system design.
• Experience with subdivision engineering.
• Familiarity with mining and environmental engineering principles.
