Psychosocial Counsellor for Refugee Women

About the role

The Psychosocial Counsellor will support young refugee and host‑community women in Nairobi, helping them build mental wellbeing, confidence and resilience as they engage in entrepreneurship training. The role combines individual and group counselling with supervision of community para‑counsellors.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual and group counselling focused on trauma, stress, anxiety and adjustment to displacement.
• Screen participants at intake, develop care plans, maintain confidential case notes and monitor progress.
• Run psycho‑education sessions on the science of trauma, resilience and stress management.
• Supervise, train and mentor community para‑counsellors, holding regular case reviews.
• Refer participants to specialist services (GBV response, legal aid, health, psychiatric care) and follow up on referrals.
• Facilitate sessions with families and community members to support women’s participation.
• Collect and share anonymised data with the MEAL team, and contribute to monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

Required profile

• Diploma in Counselling Studies, Social Work or related field; degree desirable.
• 1‑2 years relevant experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
• Registered member of the Kenya Counselling and Psychological Association (KCPA).
• Excellent command of English and Kiswahili.
• Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and GBV case management in Kenya.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel).
• Experience delivering trauma‑informed care and psychological first aid.
• Ability to maintain confidential records and use mental‑health screening tools.
