QA Automation Engineer

About the role

Watu, a fintech focused on financing and mobility across borders, is hiring a QA Automation Engineer in Nairobi (also open to Mombasa). The engineer ensures the quality and reliability of the organization's information systems through automated testing, designs and maintains test frameworks, runs functional and regression tests and works with cross-functional teams to improve system performance and usability. The role reports to the Head of System Quality Assurance within the IT Development department.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain automated test scripts using Playwright.
• Run functional and regression testing of application modules.
• Validate user interface elements and identify design and usability inconsistencies.
• Analyze and test SQL-based backend operations to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
• Set up and manage testing environments with Docker Compose.
• Review code with development teams, refine test scenarios and suggest optimizations.
• Test REST/GraphQL APIs for reliability and performance.
• Create and maintain test documentation, including test cases and defect reports.
• Carry out exploratory testing to find unanticipated issues.

Required profile

• 2+ years of experience with TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Excellent knowledge of SQL.
• Experience with Playwright.
• Strong understanding of OOP principles.
• Intermediate English.
• Ability to read the front end in TypeScript and basic knowledge of Java for backend code analysis.

Required skills

• Git version control.
• Docker Compose for environment setup and troubleshooting.
• Basic understanding of CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins).
• REST/GraphQL API testing basics and SQL/ORM tools such as Prisma.
• Advantages: UI/UX basics, Selenium or similar tools, test documentation, log analysis and debugging, application security (token validation), testing of financial applications.
