Regional Operations Specialist

About the role

The Regional Operations Specialist supports FAO’s Animal Health and Production programme across East Africa, ensuring that operational, financial and logistical aspects of animal health and One Health projects run smoothly. Working under the ECTAD Regional Manager, the specialist collaborates with programme, procurement, M&E and communication teams to deliver effective field interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate budgetary management and monitor expenditures for all programmes and projects under the guidance of the Senior Animal Health Coordinator.
• Provide day‑to‑day operational support for emergency, rehabilitation and development projects from initiation to financial closure.
• Assist in preparing work plans, tracking progress, and recommending corrective actions when operational constraints arise.
• Contribute to the drafting of project proposals, ensuring compliance with FAO procedures and securing technical clearance.
• Maintain and update project information systems and databases.
• Support the Regional Manager in planning and executing thematic activities linked to the Animal Production System and One Health programme.
• Oversee timely procurement of services and materials required for project implementation.

Required profile

• Experience in managing budgets and financial reporting for international development projects.
• Strong understanding of project management cycles, from design to closure.
• Familiarity with FAO or UN‑type procurement and proposal processes.
• Ability to work collaboratively with technical units, regional offices and headquarters.
