About the role
The Resident Obstetrician & Gynecologist will deliver comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological services to women at St. Luke's Orthopaedic & Trauma Hospital in Nairobi. The role involves managing routine and high‑risk pregnancies, performing surgical procedures, and leading multidisciplinary care teams to ensure safe, evidence‑based outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Provide outpatient and inpatient obstetric and gynaecological consultations.
- Diagnose, monitor and manage normal and high‑risk pregnancies throughout antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and postnatal periods.
- Perform elective and emergency surgeries, including Caesarean sections, hysterectomies, laparotomies and laparoscopic procedures.
- Handle obstetric and gynaecological emergencies in line with national and international guidelines.
- Conduct infertility assessments and manage benign and malignant gynaecological conditions.
- Supervise labour, maternity, theatre and gynaecology wards and mentor junior staff.
- Interpret diagnostic investigations such as ultrasound, laboratory and radiology results.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality‑improvement initiatives and on‑call emergency response.
Required profile
- MBChB degree from a recognised university and MMed in Obstetrics and Gynecology (or equivalent).
- Specialist registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and a valid practising licence.
- Minimum three years post‑specialisation experience in a Level 4‑6 hospital.
- Fellowship (COSECSA, RCOG or equivalent) and certifications in BLS and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics are advantageous.
Required skills
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics.
- Ultrasound interpretation.
- Laparoscopic and open surgical techniques (Caesarean section, hysterectomy, laparotomy).
- Management of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies.
