Risk and Compliance Manager

About the role

A reputable insurer is recruiting a Risk and Compliance Manager based in Nairobi, Kenya, to oversee the company's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and compliance functions. The role reports to the Board of Directors and has a dotted line to the CEO and Principal Officer. It covers the design, implementation and monitoring of the ERM framework to balance risk and return, and the oversight of insurance compliance programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, design and implement an overall risk management process, including risk assessment and the identification, description and estimation of risks affecting the business.
• Establish systems, policies and procedures to identify, control, manage and measure enterprise-wide risks, and ensure they are implemented and followed across the business.
• Improve risk management readiness through communication, training and risk-based performance measures.
• Develop insurance-wide risk monitoring tools, a risk register and risk ratings, and support self-assessments in line with IRA regulations and best practice.
• Report risk appropriately to the Board, business heads and individuals, and advise the Board and senior management on emerging compliance issues and on establishing controls.
• Oversee monitoring of compliance with policies, rules and procedures, ensuring corrective action is taken on deviations.
• Review the effectiveness of risk management tools and stay in touch with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) on competence matters.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Commerce in Insurance or a related degree.
• At least five years' experience in the insurance sector, including at least two years at a managerial level.
• At least five years' experience in risk or audit responsibilities, preferably in financial services.
• Professional qualification in insurance or accounting, plus relevant risk management qualifications.
• Membership in a professional body.
• Training in risk management.
