Risk Management & Peacebuilding Internship

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking an intern to support its Risk Management and Peacebuilding Section. The role will be based in Nairobi and will provide hands‑on experience in ecosystem‑based disaster risk reduction, climate security, and environmental governance in conflict‑affected and disaster‑prone contexts.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the design and implementation of Eco‑DRR and Climate‑Peace‑Security initiatives.
• Support technical assistance and capacity‑building activities for partner governments, NGOs, and local communities.
• Contribute to programme monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
• Prepare communication materials, briefs, and outreach content to promote UNEP’s work.
• Coordinate with other units within the Disasters and Conflicts Branch to integrate environmental risk considerations.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university programme related to environmental science, disaster risk management, peace studies, or a similar field.
• Strong interest in the intersection of environment, conflict, and disaster resilience.
• Excellent analytical, writing, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
