Safeguards Analyst – REDD+ Policy & Safeguards

About the role
The Safeguards Analyst will support the UNEP UN‑REDD Programme by reviewing national policies and analysing gaps in REDD+ safeguards. The role focuses on aligning country safeguards with the UNFCCC Cancun Safeguards and ART‑TREES frameworks, requiring strong policy analysis and research capabilities.
Key responsibilities
- Review national policies, laws and regulations relevant to REDD+ safeguards in supported countries.
- Draft technical notes, background papers, summaries and briefing materials for stakeholders.
- Conduct analysis of safeguards gaps and assess alignment with UNFCCC Cancun Safeguards, ART‑TREES and related frameworks.
- Document and systematise safeguards tools and guidance materials.
- Maintain organized digital repositories of country safeguards documents and regulatory frameworks.
- Organise safeguards‑related workshops, webinars and knowledge‑exchange events.
- Engage with implementation partners and national consultants to ensure follow‑up communications and support.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree (Master’s) in environmental science, natural resource management, forest policy or related field (or first‑level degree with at least two years relevant experience).
- Minimum two years of experience in natural resources management, forestry, land‑use or related fields.
- Experience working at country level in the Africa region and familiarity with African environmental governance contexts.
- Knowledge of social and environmental safeguards for REDD+ and experience in policy analysis or environmental assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under supervision and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong analytical, drafting and editing skills, with a keen interest in United Nations work.
