Senior AI/ML Engineer

About the role

The Senior AI/ML Engineer will lead the design and implementation of the core recommendation engine for ALX’s AI learning platform, Project A. This engine predicts the next optimal learning activity for each learner using probabilistic models that operate from a cold‑start and continuously improve as data is collected.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain the competency navigation algorithm that maps learners to competencies.
• Encode domain prerequisite structures and priors to enable effective cold‑start recommendations.
• Build data pipelines that transform unstructured platform data into signals for LLM‑based evaluation.
• Develop and evaluate models that assess learner effectiveness, at‑risk profiling, and feedback loops.
• Iterate on the algorithm as real learner data becomes available, transitioning from pure engineering to full ML/data‑science work.

Required profile

• Deep experience in probabilistic and Bayesian modelling, preferably with domain‑structure based approaches.
• Strong Python programming skills and ability to ship production‑ready code.
• Familiarity with Bayesian Knowledge Tracing, Knowledge Space Theory, or related educational modeling frameworks.
• Ability to design and implement pipelines for unstructured data and LLM processing.
• Self‑starter attitude suited to a small, high‑impact team.
