Senior Lawyer - Privacy

About the role

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is seeking a Senior Lawyer to join its Information & Data Law Team. You will provide specialist legal advice on privacy, information handling and data governance, supporting ASIC’s compliance with the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information framework while enabling innovative data initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on complex privacy, information‑sharing and data‑governance matters under the Privacy Act and related legislation.
• Lead and coordinate Privacy Impact Assessments and deliver privacy‑by‑design guidance for projects and programmes.
• Support data and technology initiatives, advising on emerging technologies, analytical tools and regulatory obligations.
• Monitor legislative developments, advise on Commonwealth privacy reforms and contribute to policy development.
• Investigate and manage privacy incidents and suspected data breaches, including containment, remediation and reporting.
• Prepare high‑quality legal advice, reports, briefings and guidance for internal stakeholders.
• Build productive relationships with business units and provide risk‑based legal counsel to support strategic decisions.
• Mentor and supervise junior team members, enhancing team capability.

Required profile

• Admission to legal practice in Australia with a law degree.
• Significant experience in privacy, data protection and information law, preferably within a regulatory or government context.
• Demonstrated ability to advise senior stakeholders on complex legal and policy issues.
• Strong analytical, research and written communication skills.
• Experience conducting Privacy Impact Assessments and managing privacy incidents.
