Senior Project Manager – Heavy Civils, Tunnel & Shafts

About the role

Joseph Gallagher, a leading UK civil engineering and tunnelling subcontractor, is seeking a Senior Project Manager to oversee heavy civil, tunnel and shaft works on critical infrastructure projects. The role demands a strong safety focus, commercial acumen and the ability to drive projects from design through to delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe, efficient site environment that reflects Joseph Gallagher’s high standards.
• Maximise commercial performance of contracts and manage cost control for unplanned work.
• Produce procurement schedules and coordinate with the procurement team to secure necessary resources.
• Forecast, monitor and communicate changes to scope, cost and schedule.
• Report risks and opportunities to senior management.
• Deliver work to specified quality standards, ensuring defect‑free outcomes.
• Prepare and implement Project Plans, RAMS, ITPs and waste‑management plans in line with company procedures.
• Maintain detailed site diaries and records.

Required profile

• Degree or HNC in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) – minimum degree qualified.
• SMSTS certification.
• Extensive experience managing civil, tunnel and shaft projects with minimal supervision.
• Proven ability to challenge designs, resolve technical issues and drive projects to successful completion.

Required skills

• Proficiency with NEC4 contracts (Option A).
• Design Management and Risk Management expertise.
• Cost control, forecasting and value assessment capabilities.
• Production of CVR documentation.
• Knowledge of RAMS, ITPs and waste‑management planning.
