Senior Scientist - Silviculture

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks a Senior Scientist to lead silviculture research that supports sustainable forest governance across Africa and beyond. The role combines scientific leadership, project management, and partnership development to advance the Centre’s mission of integrating trees into agricultural landscapes.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and supervise multi‑country silviculture research programmes.
• Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring financial targets are met.
• Lead scientific writing, peer‑reviewed publications and donor reports.
• Mentor junior scientists, graduate students and technical staff.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Identify and secure additional research funding through proposal development and fundraising.
• Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with NGOs, governments, and research institutions.

Required profile

• PhD in forestry, silviculture, natural resource management or a closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in collaborative natural‑resource or social‑science research, preferably across multiple regions.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated success in budget management and donor‑funded project delivery.
• Excellent written and spoken English; additional languages are a plus.
• Experience working in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams and coordinating fieldwork in developing countries.
