Software Engineering Team Lead

About the role

M-KOPA is looking for a Software Engineering Team Lead to drive the design and delivery of its next‑generation loan origination, compliance, and pricing platforms. You will shape systems that enable millions of first‑time borrowers across Africa to access affordable credit.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of backend engineers on greenfield and legacy projects, owning the full software lifecycle from design to decommissioning.
• Define and enforce architectural direction for event‑driven, microservice‑based solutions.
• Partner with the Product Manager to plan road‑maps, prioritize work, and align technical delivery with business goals.
• Foster a DevOps culture with infrastructure‑as‑code, automated testing, observability, and continuous delivery.
• Mentor and grow engineers, acting as a servant leader who removes blockers and promotes high‑quality output.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading backend engineering teams in a fast‑moving, mission‑driven environment.
• Strong background in designing scalable, event‑driven microservices.
• Hands‑on expertise with cloud platforms (Azure required, AWS/GCP a plus).
• Commitment to quality, observability, and continuous improvement.

• Event‑driven messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar)
• Prometheus & Grafana for monitoring
