Staff Back-End Engineer – Remote (Europe/Africa)

About the role

We’re hiring a Staff Back-End Engineer to help make government system integrations cheaper and more reliable. You’ll join the Connections squad and turn complex integration tasks into reusable capabilities for teams across the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Ship production features from proposal to deployment.
• Build core capabilities such as system registration, credential sharing, and high‑performance workflow workers.
• Define and guide the backend architecture, including module boundaries and service interfaces.
• Establish consistent coding patterns and conventions, especially when using AI development tools.
• Strengthen platform security by translating findings into architectural changes and improving trust boundaries.

Required profile

• 8+ years building and operating backend services for customer‑facing products.
• Proven experience designing backend service architectures and operating highly reliable, scalable systems.
• Strong Node.js background; ability to learn Elixir/Phoenix.
• Independent work style and effective collaboration across Europe/Africa time zones using GitHub and Slack.
• Clear, professional English communication and ability to work across cultures.
